Mission "To share with visitors to Rieck's Lake Park a knowledge of and an appreciation for the tundra swan and the associated flora and fauna of the Mississippi River valley." Alma Tundra Swan Watch |
On November 20, 2009 there were 13 Tundra Swans visible from the observation platform. There were more swans farther back towards Tell Pond and further up along HWY. 35, There have been several hundred swans at Big Lake just below Nelson and around a thousand swans at Weaver the last couple of days. Even though the numbers are not high at Rieck’s Lake, it is still the best place to see the swans up close and safely off of the highway. At Riecks Lake there are also numerous waterfowl and bird species including, mallards, green-winged teal, American wigeon, gadwall, wood duck, northern shoveler and American coots and there are still great –blue herons and Amercian egrets hanging around. Bald Eagles are seen regularly as well. If you are interested in seeing large masses of swans then take a visit to Pool 8 on the Mississippi River near Reno and Brownsville MN. The numbers of swans in the river valley will continue to rise over the next couple of weeks, and this message will be updated when conditions change. The following is a list of swans seen at Riecks Lake in the fall of 2004. If any banded swans are spotted, please feel free to contact the Alma Tundra Swan Watch
